Building work commenced in the spring of 2014 and was completed in the Spring of 2015 - ensuring Moreton retains a community focal point for future generations to enjoy. All thanks to substantial funds from The Big Lottery, Viridor, Purbeck District Council, Garfield Weston and many other supporters.
We believe that the existing hall was donated by the army shortly after the First World War (about 1920). It was originally two army huts and they were transported to the site from Bovington by horse and cart and joined together to form the hall.
Originally it had neither electricity nor a water supply. One resident recalls that her uncle was tasked with bringing a churn of water down on a cart, prior to any event in the hall. There were no inside toilet facilities – the loo was a hut with a pit in the woodland outside!
Lighting was provided by oil lamps hung from the ceiling. A row of black ‘Valor’ paraffin oil stoves down the centre of the hall provided the heating – with the addition of a woodburning stove on the stage area
There was a flag pole on the little triangle of green in front of the hall.
The hall has been in constant use since the 1920s and is a much loved part of the village. Sadly it has now reached the stage where repairs are no longer a viable option.
The Moreton Village Hall
Management Committee held open public meetings to explain the condition of the existing hall and to seek the views oflocal residents on the implications of this. The overwhelming response was a unanimous vote for a new village hall.
